With the end of the year quickly approaching it is important to remember to file your homestead exemption for your property taxes. If you aren't sure what a homestead exemption is or whether or not you qualify - here are some helpful tips:
-
What is a homestead exemption? Homestead exemptions are provided by the county appraisal district. This exemption reduces the homeowner's property tax bill by removing some of the homes value from taxation. Other taxing entities may also offer exemptions of some percentage of the home's value. Other examptions are available to homeowners who are over 65 or disabled.

Who qualifies? There are a couple qualifications - you must own your home on Jan 1 of the year you are applying. You must reside at the home as your principle residence and not claim any other property as a homestead. Only individual homeowners (not corporations or other entities) may receive the exemption. A homestead can be a house, condo, or manufactured home. It can include up to 20 acres, if the land is also owned by the homeowner and used as a yard or for another purpose related to residential use.
